Sounds & Letters

The sounds of Tyranoquese are divided between 27 consonants and 7 distinct vowel sounds. There is a one-to-one correlation between a sound and the grapheme used to orthographically represent that sound. The following charts will provide the IPA symbol, the associated grapheme in English, the glyph used in the Tyranoquese script, an English-oriented description of how to produce the sound, and an example word from Tyranoquese.

[top]Vowels

The vowels in Tyranoquese are short; the English examples given are not always perfect representations, and should be pronounced more like vowels in Spanish. Note: The Tyranoquese script does not have vowels.

[top]Other Considerations

1. The stress system in Tyranoquese is always penultimate.

2. There is no orthographic doubling of the same sound, be it a consonant or vowel. Consequently, phonetic gemination does not occur (with one main exception, explained below). The lack of orthographic doubling applies across the word boundary. Thus, if a word begins with the same sound that ends the preceding word, the second instantiation is eliminated and the words are combined with an apostrophe. For example:

*Řypi vořyp-dhu uptut —> Řypi vořyp-dhu’ptut

The only exception is with names. Thus Tar Reš, the Sun God, is never written *Tar’eš. In this exceptional case, gemination may occur (e.g. [ta.r:eʃ]) Another example of this is the formal mountain, Ljřet Tiranaka, [ʎɾe.ti.ra.na.ka].

In rare cases, a hyphen is used with certain affixes, most notably the negation affix dhu. Čelan-dhu means “I am not.”
