Moko, the land of wealth and beauty, truly changed our lives. When our ancestors arrived at this place over a hundred years ago, they discovered a great paradise full of plants and animals. In order to prevent this from going to waste, our ancestors rescued this place from the ungrateful natives* and began to cultivate it to its full potential. The year begins early in the dry season, when the harvest is over and food is plentiful. New years celebrations begin, with great festivals being held in all the nomadic villages. There is song and dance and merriment, and merchants travel between villages selling their crafts. A common tradition is to wear a mask during the festivities, so that your drunken actions don't affect your social image after the festival is over. The new years festivals usually last for three days.
However, none of the nomadic festivals come close to the grandness of the festival held in Kotosgoth, the beautiful permanent city. Hundreds of nomads from all over Moko gather in Kotosgoth, bringing with them exotic dishes and crafts. This wonderful festival is not only a new years festival, but also the anniversary of the city's founding, and it normally lasts for six days.
Halfway after the start of the year, the wet season begins**. Maize is planted from the beginning of the wet season, and harvested at the end. The wet season lasts for half the year, and though the rain brings with it great growth, if not enough food has been stored, the wet season can also be a time of hunger. The great city of Kotosgoth combats this by growing other food, such as bananas, which can be grown all year. Truly, we should all be following their lead.
Occasionally, the wet season also brings floods. If these disasters ever occur, there is little that can be done, and there will be hunger. Despite these great risks, Moko is still a wonderful place of wealth and beauty, compared to the islands that our ancestors once lived on, and the ones that our relatives still do.
After the wet season is over, it is time for the year to end. On the night before new years, people light lanterns with their families and pray to the gods for good things to come in the next year. Then, it is time for the new years celebrations to begin again.
*This is a bit of an embellishment. The Kerdu ancestors most likely would not have known about the agricultural opportunities Moko, and probably just displaced the native Tursic people because they were tired of sailing. Things have since settled down between the two groups, though relations are still quite tense.
**From April to September. The Kerdu people don't have any concept of months.
Also, fun fact! The Tursic people mostly used the cassava plant for their carbohydrates, grains were relatively unknown to them. The Kerdu people don't really use the plant, as they prefer maize, so it has gone mostly uncultivated except for some tribes in the Kengast rainforest.

Hello, I am Yiliya, the guardian of the Eastern Bird tribe, and this is how we make weird fruit juice.First, we get a fruit. Then we drop it on the ground. Then we wait for a long time.
Then it starts to smell very weird. That is when you pick it up. Then you squeeze it, or maybe you don't want to, so you eat it.
If you squeeze it very hard then you make juice, but you have to be quick to drink it or it will fall all over the ground, and that is gross, and you won't be able to drink it.
If you feel weird, you have made weird fruit juice. If you don't feel weird, then you have not made it.
Goodbye for now.
--------------------------------
Hello, I am Malaǁho, the guardian of the Southern Margay tribe, and this is how we make a salad.
First, we get some fruits. It can be any fruit, or maybe you want leaves, so you can get those too. Then we find a very big tree branch and we put fruits and leaves on the tree branch. We must not put them on the ground as that is dirty and gross.
Then, we mix up fruits and maybe leaves, if you have them. Then we pick them all up and eat them all at once.
If you eat them all at once, you have made a salad. If you eat them one by one, that is not a salad anymore.
If you cannot fit them all in your mouth then you must make a smaller salad. You must also work on making your mouth bigger, so then you can have a bigger salad.
Goodbye for now.
--------------------------------
Is this really what you expect us to do? I know we take the form of monkeys, but we don't act like those lesser spirits. We're intelligent and mature, and we don't scream and throw poop at every intruder like they do, and we certainly don't eat their disgusting menus. In fact, we don't really eat at all. But you think that's weird, even weirder than being able to talk, so you make us do these strange things. We find it quite amusing, and you're lucky that we do, or else you'd find yourself trying to banish your bad luck for years after. Regardless, please don't actually follow this recipe. That seems unsafe.

A long, long time ago, when Nadaz and I were young and small, our parents died. We do not know how or why, as no one ever told us. Brother was forced to look after us, even though he was still a child too. He could not survive on his own with us, so he desperately begged for help to whoever would listen. A bleeding heart only attracts leeches, but he was too young to know. One day, he found some people who said that they would help us. Nadaz and I were happy and free and we played and became friends with many spirits, and this was all we knew for many years. Brother said that things were well. He said that he had fallen in love with a woman, one of the people who helped us when we were lost. Our lives were good, for a while.
I don't know when things changed for Brother. He refused to say anything to Nadaz and I, after all was finished. The elder came up to us one day, and said that Brother had killed many, many people. Then, in the night, he came for us and we ran away. He cried for a long, long time, and I cried too. Nadaz only watched, like Nadaz always does.
Now, we live in the big, big fields that lay outside our old rainforest home. Brother uses his magic to heal people, and we have become very famous and everyone wants to see us. We were even invited to go to Kotosgoth*, to see the big New Year's Festival. Brother says we might, and I hope we do.
There are spirits here too, but they are sad, very sad. Brother still cries in his sleep, and I still miss home and the happiness we had there. Later, Nadaz and I realized that Brother had stopped seeing, too. We became his eyes, freeing up magic that could now be used for healing, even though we should still be spending our childhoods free and bound by nothing.
Even though I knew that doing so would only cause more pain, I still asked Brother what happened to the woman that he loved. He turned around and showed me a terrible scar on his back, and I knew that I should not ask again. Nadaz only watched, like Nadaz always does.
We don't talk about home anymore.
*Yes, this is the same Kotosgoth talked about in the Seasons & Time post! Small world, huh?

The hroma is a large wingless bird that once lived all over north and central Moko. It has a small head and a long neck, and it is covered in small, brown feathers. The males have a crest of blue atop their heads. Its legs are strong, and fierce, and if you make one angry then they can hurt you worse than any warrior. The largest hroma is taller than a man, and heavier than a boulder, and we are sure that no other bird in the world is larger than it.Its meat and its eggs provided sustenance to our ancestors, and so they were revered and worshiped as pillars of society. Only the old birds would be hunted, as they had already lived a long, magnificent life, and were ready to move on. Becoming a part of us was seen as the highest honor, as even in death they were still able to help nature move on. The eggs we ate were only the ones without chicks, as a baby hroma still had many years before it. In exchange for the nutrients they brought us, we gave them the best of the land, full of wild plants to satisfy them. Truly, we were in a state of symbiosis with them.
However, the invading ocean people* had other ideas. They took our land, forcing us to travel far to the north, decimating our populations just as they hunted these great birds until there was barely any left. Then they turned their attention on the buffalo, enslaving them so that they would carry food and people between villages, cutting the earth and burning forests to make pathways. These strange ocean people did not know how to care for the land, which already provided us with everything we needed to live, ripping out every possible thing they could find until there was none left.
When we went north, we brought many hroma with us, but the land was different, and their chosen foods were few. They could no longer sustain themselves like they once did. Their numbers are now far less than they used to be, and the hroma have learned to fear humans. Though they were once used for food by our ancestors, we no longer can, as we know that doing so may send them into extinction. The tale of the hroma and our people is truly, very sad.

@[Deactivated User] Thanks!! And Thaways are, essentially, angels. They're considered very special in Vaiser culture, as well as the culture of many other rainforest tribes. All monkeys are technically 'spirits', but the Thaways are 'different'. I can't really specify how that works, as it's kinda spoilery for a game I'm working on!! :o
