Menu 1. Standard Qgam 2. Caa Ļer 3. Dem The Qgam vowel system comprises four basic vowels, three of which have long forms, resulting in a system of seven basic vowels: /e i a o eː aː oː/. Qgam syllables allow for complex onset clusters comprising as many as four consonants, but the optional coda is restricted to five consonants: /j w ɻ m ŋ/. These coda consonants interact with the vowel in various ways, (and in some dialects, the onset may also affect vowel quality), greatly increasing the total inventory of spoken vowels. The following charts outline the Qgam syllable rhymes from certain dialects. The Romanization provided clarifies the formation of each vowel.

Following is the Romanization (based on Standard Qgam) used in these charts:

[edit] [top]Standard Qgam

The dialect spoken in the capital of Hwam Deaĝ Ruom is the official standard dialect of Qgam. It is characterized particularly by the palatalization of back vowels when following the palatal consonants /ɕ t͡ɕ d͡ʑ ʎ ç j/, as well as fairly significant alteration of vowel quality when followed by the coda consonants /j/ and /w/.

  • Vowels in parentheses indicate allophones induced by palatal onset consonants, whose positions are marked orthographically with underscores.
  • The vowels ‹ wo › /wɔə̯/ and ‹ uo › /ʊə̯/ are the two surface realizations of the theoretical vowel /oː/, the latter variant appearing only after onset clusters of two or more consonants.

[edit] [top]Caa Ļer

The Qgam dialect spoken in Caa Ļer is the archetypal dialect of Eastern Qgam dialects. It is characterized by a comparatively simple vowel inventory, the merger of coda consonants /m/ and /ŋ/ into /ŋ/, and notably the replacement of coda /ɻ/ with creaky voice (and onset /ɻ/ with /ɾ/).

The Dem dialect is the most-spoken form of the Southern Qgam dialects. It is characterized by a relatively simple vowel inventory and the nasalization of vowels preceding nasal coda consonants.
