Long time ago, before the mawic people settled down in the valley of Maw river, they used symbols, to mark their belongings. Every family had their own symbol. They were based on animals, other natural features, or abstract geometric shapes. These symbols were carved into wooden sticks, tool handles, or sewed on to their clothes. The AWM word for write is sã, which also means carve. It comes from the Proto-Mawo-Caláic word kharan (carve).
After settling down in the Maw valley, they used paper, ink and brushes to write these symbols, and they developed a more sophisticated writing system, the sãgwá sãgwá. Ancient-Mawic script had a different version with more angular shapes, the kwusãgwá kwusãgwá. Kwusãgwá was carved into stone to decorate temples and palaces.
In the earlier times several sãgwá symbols were used as alphabetic charactes, to express more accurate meanings.

In some contexts this might be confusing. Later sãgwá was expanded with new symbols. They call them ḑgáw-thál - ḑgáw-thál which means sound sign. The ḑgáwthál system was an alphabet, but it was only used to help out the old sãgwá characters.

Some ḑgáwthál characters are combined into ligatures to shorten the texts, they call them qu-thól - qu-thól, which comes from together+sign .
Áqindá (hold name) is a long line above the word. It is used to mark proper nouns, such as name of people and places. It is romanised as "*".

Numerals are not easy. AWM uses a seximal base system. It has 10 symbols to mark numbers. The symbols are:

In romanisation sometimes we use "-" to separate symbols, and to mark borders. For example the word: Ümẽt - I get/understand could be written as ümẽt, but we used the symbol üm (üm - beard) which might be misleading altough the pronounciation is the same. The right way to write is ü-mẽt - ü-mẽt.
