A villanelle is a type of poem characterized by a strict structure with repeated lines. The traditional structure is five three-line stanzas followed by a four-line stanza in the following pattern (letter indicates rhyme; capital letters are repeated lines): A1bA2 abA1 abA2 abA1 abA2 abA1A2

Probably the most famous villanelle is "Do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas.

It is not a traditional form of poetry among Tirina speakers; nevertheless, here is a villanelle in Tirina. It sounds rather overwrought and terrible when translated into English, but don't worry--it's at least that bad in Tirina too. Meter is mostly anapestic tetrameter, but the second line of each tercet (three-line stanza) is anapestic trimeter (or tetrameter with a fixed caesura at the fourth foot). Why yes, I did spend a lot of time on Wikipedia reading up on poetry rather than working on this, why do you ask?

Note: no attempt has been made to maintain meter/rhyme in English.

In the forest, in the valley, at the harsh beginning,
He advised, this man, like a king:
Go on then, never frightened, because you are the One.

This mud between my toes is venom.
It drags me down often,
In the forest, in the valley, at the harsh beginning.

I am giving up, I am losing disgracefully.
Then I remember what the man has been saying:
Go on then, never frightened, because you are the One.

I must still travel along this line,
Almost I understand why!
In the forest, in the valley, at the harsh beginning.

Oh, I am running now and forever, I am overcoming.
I declare over and over again:
Go on then, never frightened, because you are the One.

In the future, I will have joyfully and entirely won.
Yes, I will teach it all to my son:
In the forest, in the valley, at the harsh beginning,
Go on then, never frightened, because you are the One.
