[edit] [top]Linguistic Fossils in  Nolwynn

tabalu – "eventually." This word comes from taba “time” and the non-productive infix –lu-, which meant “to be spread out across an indefinite area.”

iig - "it is not." In modern Nolwynn ii- means "they." However, iig is a special verb in Nolwynn. It used to mean simply “to not exist." It looks like it should mean “they are not,” but that is because of sound changes that occurred in ancient Nolwynn; iig is just a fossilized remnant of an older sound system.

It can still be conjugated like a regular verb and used to mean “to forbid,” but that is an archaic usage. In the context of the yearly Marriage Festival, eeyg means "I reject [a marriage candidate]." You might even hear impassioned cries of iig ág!, which means “Don’t reject!” or perhaps more literally "You are forbidden to reject!" Someone who repeatedly rejects marriage proposals is called an iiger. This word is pronounced more like eker /ek'eɾ/. In fact, iig and most of its derivatives are pronounced more like /ek/ in modern Nolwynn.

zaltu - This auxiliary verb is used to create the conditional mood, where it means “ought,” or “should” or “might have.” Use this mood to convey the meaning of something that should, might, or could have been. It is almost always used with the perfective aspect, to describe a hypothetical event that could have occurred.

Zaltu is derived from zalteey, a word with a wide semantic range meaning anything from "to do/be/work/happen/exist/be in charge of/etcetera." Zaltu is a linguistic fossil from ancient Nolwynn, which contained a true conditional mood for all verbs.
