The Egeriac script is an abjad, it is written horizontally from left to right, in the past the boustrophedonic direction was also used.

In the Egeriac script, the vowel signs are often omitted when the context can give clear information about the pronunciation of the word.

The signs for y and w are also used for i and u respectively in affixes and functional words like pronouns and adpositions.

the mutation signs are used to indicate "mutated" consonants i.e. [p] [t] [k] [b] [d] between vowels, or [f] [θ] [x] [ð] in initial position.
