[edit] [top]Overview

The Old Qgam script is a vertically-written, phonetic script used to write  Old Qgam. It is the direct ancestor of the Modern Qgam Script, and contains several letters and ligatures that have been discarded in the simplified modern script.

Consonants generally connect upwards to preceding letters. Exceptions include the letter , which only connects upwards on the right side, the letters and , which do not connect upwards, and the letter , which does not connect to any letters.

Most letters connect downward only on the side which carries a descender or endpoint, e.g. , , and connect downward on the left only, while , , and connect downward on the right only.

With few exceptions, vowel letters connect to preceding consonant letters:



Confusingly, while the letters ā/ ī, ō/ ū, and o/ u are mirror images of each other and represent different vowel sounds, the letters ē, e, i, and a are consistently mirrored simply for aesthetic reasons, in order to connect with the previous letter.

Old Qgam script does not indicate word boundaries, and consonants able to connect to preceding vowels will do so, whether they are part of the same word or not:




kā gā

ā mašra

The letters w, y, and r take on special forms when following vowels, and will connect to them whenever possible:

[edit] [top]Sentences

The Old Qgam script employs no punctuation. Words are not separated by spaces; spaces instead carry the functions of both commas and full stops. The writing direction is top to bottom, left to right.
