There are 4 genders in Ataku, which make up what is essentially an animacy system:
First gender: People, higher spirits, and gods
-a/o/an
Second gender: Animals, tools, lower spirits
-e/i/en
Third gender: Plants, "active" objects, elements
-es/as
Fourth gender: "inactive" objects, nominal verbs(the act of X)
-ŋ
Changing the gender of a noun changes its meaning:
Root: jēc "bone"
jēca /***a/ jēc-a bone-I "Name of the god of intelligence, weapons, tools, and technology"
jēce /***e/ jēc-e bone-II "tool"
jēces /***es/ jēc-es bone-III "bone"
