The kinship system of  Proto-Akali-Emisian has remained in some sense in all branches (in some cases, it is almost unaltered, particularly in the Qomisian languages; in others, it has changed almost past recognition, particularly in the Akalic languages), and it has been reconstructed with a fair degree of confidence. The system resembles Inuit kinship, as it maintains a distinction between lineal and collateral kin, but rather than lineal beginning with one's parents, it begins with one's grandparents. The system can be seen below, assuming that Ego is in generation 0:

Generations From EgoLineal TermCollateral Term
+2(grandparent)(great auntuncle)
+1-tæçqet-naqaþ
0-χ'ʷǽm-k'ʷeɲáh
-1-ɲaix(nefiece)
-2(grandchild)(get off my lawn)

The lineal terms are used if one is related by grandparents or closer. It is thought that collateral kin was considered to be acceptable marriageable partners, and this widened definition of lineal kin was not.
