The island was originally inhabited by solely Celtic people, however they were assimilated into the Roman Empire and made to speak Latin. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Latin spoken in Isca naturally evolved on the island without much outside influence, except for some trading with other Celtic people, as well as the old Anglo-Saxons, which heavily influenced the language. The country was later occupied from France from 1822 until the island had brief independence from 1889 until 1914 when it became part of the British Empire up until 1946. Because of that, even though the language was relatively unchanged and managed to survive, Iscan gained many French and English loanwords. Very little of the early Celtic language spoken on Isca before the Roman Empire remains. ✎ Edit Article ✖ Delete Article
