The country of Amestris is a landlocked unitary state, covering 723,456 square kilometres of land. It is split into five administrative divisions, Central, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western. It holds roughly 50,000,000 people, and its government is somewhere between a parliamentary republic and a stratocracy, the country having a parliament, but it holds very little power compared to the army. The head of state, and head of government, is the commander-in-chief of the military, bearing the title of Führer.
It originally started only as what is now called Central, and expanded since the nation's founding in 1550, until it covered the area it does today, 1918 on the Amestrian calendar.
The geography and climate varies widely across the nation, with it being mountainous, cold and snowy in the north, dry and arid in the east, bordering the eastern desert, with grassy plains in the south and west. Central has more urban development than the rest of the nation, but that still isn't much.
Eastern has more diversity than the rest of Amestris, due to it containing the province of Ishval, conquered by Amestris in the late 1800s. Ishvalans are ethnically and culturally different to Amestrians, and the central government has always considered Ishval to be unstable. These tensions culminated in the Ishvalan civil war of 1901, caused by a military officer (Later revealed to be the alchemically created Homunculus Envy) shot an Ishvalan child, leading to all out rebellion.
Amestris is known as an alchemical and technological superpower, having mastered the science of alchemy, and refined it for use in warfare. Alchemy is the science of understanding, deconstructing and reconstructing matter, built upon the principle of equivalent exchange, in which something can only be gained if something of equal value is lost.
Amestris was at war on almost every border, with Drachma in the north, Creta in the west and Aerugo in the south. Despite this, they hold high quality of living inside their nation, and is holding stalemates, or superiority in all of its conflicts, a testament to the power of their military.
Their latest conflict however, was the greatest since the country's inception, when a civil war took place, culminating in a battle for the capital, Central City, in which Fürher Bradley was killed, and replaced with Führer Grumman. Under Grumman's rule, peace treaties were promoted with neighbouring countries, and wrought closer ties with Xing in the far east, across the desert, a nation which had previously been isolating itself from the world.
