[Public] ? ?
what is the subjunctive?

well, the subjunctive is not really a tense...its more of a mood.
it's hypothetical, or shows of doubt.

You aren't sure it will happen.

there are two types of subjunctives in  Caribbean Patois, the present,
and the past.

here, we will both.

Present Subjunctive: le presèn subjwonktif

for 1st person, singular(mi), add "-a" at the end of verb.
for 2nd person, singular(tu), add "-as" at the end of verb.
for 3rd person, singular(you, il, la, sa), add "-a" at the end of verb.
-
for 1st person, plural(wi), add "-ayon" at the end of verb.
for 2nd person, plural(dey), add "-aye" at the end of verb.
for 3rd person, plural(vou, sa), add "-ayàn" at the end of verb.

if a verb ends in a vowel(or vowel + h) take away both the vowel and h, then add the verb ending.
ex. I want, it will be mi ka, instead of mi kèh.

How to tell if its suppose to be in the present subjunctive?

Usually when sentences start with if, if there is the conjunction "ke", or if it suggest a possibility, or something that isn't habitual. It is sometimes like this, but not always.

Past Subjunctive: le pàs subjwonktif

for 1st person, singular(mi), add "-si" at the end of verb.
for 2nd person, singular(tu), add "-si" at the end of verb.
for 3rd person, singular(you, il, la, sa), add "-si" at the end of verb.
-
for 1st person, plural(wi), add "-siyon" at the end of verb.
for 2nd person, plural(dey), add "-siye" at the end of verb.
for 3rd person, plural(vou, sa), add "-siyen" at the end of verb.

if a verb ends in an h, remove it and just put the past subjunctive verb ending.
if the verb ends in a consonant, add "i" infront of the verb ending.

*when talking in the past subjunctive, make sure to use the irregular past verb changes!

How to tell if its suppose to be in the past subjunctive

Same with the present. Except you would conjugate as if you were talking in the past.
Ex. If I was, instead of If I am.

The past subjunctive and the conditional are almost always connected.

*The subjunctive can also be used when you're joking, and you don't want to be taken seriously!

Ex. Sentences:
le doktòh dirèh ke il deva tirèh le pil kon alimèn
the doctor says that he should take his pills with food

le ninyèn espiyèh si le fad de tis kèmisi ayèh
the boy wonders if the tooth fairy came last night

That's all for this lesson!
