In Tovaala, there is one mutation. It occurs
- after the prepositions si "in", rán "to, towards", yár "for", löi "on", wán "under", ánu "from", úma "over"
- in adjectives describing nouns
- in animate nouns in the Genitive Singular
- after the numeral "one"
- in the second element of many compounds (e.g. in names)

m > v
f > ph
th, dh, lh > s, n, l
The red sky. - Jaraaq birga.
vs
The sky is red. - Jaraaq pirga kyül kaun.
I am in the house. - Si dinggoṭ óni kán.
I go towards the tree. - Rán gappin óni tátor.
The winds of the night. - Fírlir gamjákäs.
