Menu 1. iae 2. iaö 3. Contrasting uses The English word 'and' can be translated into  Edievian with two different words: iae and iaö. Here's how they differ.

Iae /jɛ/ is described in Edievian as iocops pres, "near connector." It is used to join items of a list, verbs that share the same subject (though not always), and generally is used to join words within the same clause.

  • Neotan iun, glaot, iae badad.
I bought eggs, milk, and bread.
  • Rencáind siáe pavaon oc iae siáe haem oc.
    My sister and mother arrived.
  • Bevaond siáomives iae catives he nes podofiv.
Tonight we're going to eat and drink until we pass out.

Iaö /jao̯/ (in some dialects, /jo/) is described in Edievian as iocops iet, "far connector." It is used to join two clauses (normally when they have different subjects).

  • Fesaen siáe haem oc badad iaö siáomaen siáe pavaon oc aem non.
My mother baked bread and my sister ate all of it.
  • Oban aéis art iaö scaolan cam.
I went to the store and I saw a man.

[edit] [top]Contrasting uses

While iae is the default option for items in a list, iaö is used if a list item contains iae to avoid confusion:

  • Neotom tort, banan iae1 ciérescal, iaö2 caramael.
We bought a cake, bananas and1 cherries, and2 caramel.

Iaö has an additional nuance of 'and then', and therefore can be used in place of iae when describing actions done by the same subject if the speaker wishes to emphasize the separateness of one of them.

  • Obac aéis aelvard, giúdac siáe cóisna, iaö fesac siáe claemsió gaorte at.
I'll go home, clean the kitchen, and then I'll cook your damn dinner.

The choice between iae and iaö can also distinguish the overlap of verbal actions, similar to the usage above.

  • Gaöben siáen art iae slen.
You walked into the store and fell (simultaneously).
  • Gaöben siáen art iaö slen.
You walked into the store and fell (afterwards).
