1950 AD - Spring

Day 1 - Nest new 4. I choose K to help. I am happy to see him. Time passes. Eggs look good, warm, active. One is small. We watch him. Goods usual packed well, no surprises.

Day 2 - K thinks I over-react to egg little. He called me out as a flyer mothering. I am not mad at him, though. I feel like a flyer mother sometimes.

Day 5 - I've become a soft egg! K slayed me sparring. I over-hatch.
1950 AD - Spring

Day 1 - New four-clutch, asked K to assist. I'm glad to see him. It’s been a while. Eggs look good, warm enough, responsive. One is a little small. We’ll keep an eye on him. Usual supplies in good order, no surprises.

Day 2 - K thinks I’m overreacting to the small egg. Called me a mother hen. I can’t be mad at him, though. I feel like a mother hen sometimes.

Day 5 - I’m getting soft. K demolished me in sparring. I’ve been hatching too long.

Day 10 - Eggs growing well, temperature good. One kicked in the night and woke me up, strong sign. Little egg (betsamua) is still little. I’m still worried.

Day 14 - Hatching day! Largest egg opened. He’s the kicker. Still kicking. K says I can’t call him “kicker” (yibutsiel) because Azrael will object. I don’t care what Azrael thinks. I like calling him Bootsy.

Day 15 - No more hatchings today. Bootsy taking milk well. He looks like a lump of clay right now. They’re so cute when they’re still soft.

Day 16 - Bootsy is figuring out his wings. Not well but he’s trying. No more hatchings. Betsamua is cooler today.

Day 17 - The coffee-speckled egg hatched today. He’s a screamer (halapel). We thought he might be. He wakes up his bethkibe (clutch-mates), even the ones in the shell. Betsamua is cooler again; I’ve started carrying him in my wrap. Even K is getting worried now. (Oniroh K nizhiri, atuqets.)

Day 18 - Bootsy’s eyes are open. He can’t decide if he likes it or not. K made coffee and Betsamua kicked, first movement in almost 20 hours. We’re making coffee twice a day now.

Day 19 - Betsamua is the last unhatched egg. This one hatched with eyes open like he couldn’t wait to see the world. I’m calling him “seeker” (ufetsiel) for now. Bootsy and Halapel have been trying to walk but it’s still early. Bootsy seems frustrated and angry about it. Halapel hasn’t vocalized at all yet; all his screaming is silent.

Day 20 - Ufetsiel wasn’t in the nest this morning. K found him rolling for the cliff like he would fly away. Little guy is on the go. Bootsy’s feathers are starting to come in and he itches. He’s imitating our preening already, which is good. Halapel likes K’s nose; he keeps trying to remove it. He’s settled for mimicking it instead.

Day 21 - Betsamua is cooler again, even in my wrap. K wouldn’t give me a third cup of coffee, said I was too jumpy as it was. I won’t lose him. I won’t.

Day 23 - Halapel found the mirrors today. He’s a vain little thing, can’t stop staring at himself. Ufetsiel came to see what he was looking at and got scared. Bootsy got the hiccups over it which gave Ufetsiel the giggles. They might be rishkibe already. It’s hard to tell.

Day 24 - Betsamua hasn’t moved in 28 hours. K says I’m imagining the heartbeat. I’m not. He’s still in there. I won’t let him go.

Day 28 - He’s here. Finally.

Day 29 - I was awake all night with Muael. He breathes hard but he breathes. Halapel came to see him a few times in the night. The others have been taking turns all morning to check on him. K brought me coffee so I didn’t have to get up.

Day 30 - Anarriel. No longer little.

Day 30 - K had to pull Ufetsiel back from the cliff again. He cried about it. He barely has pinfeathers and he still wants to fly. He reminds me of K at that age.

Day 32 - Halapel still won’t vocalize but he pe (shouts) fine. K has been trying to teach them to sing. Ufetsiel and Bootsy have got it down but Halapel only hums a little. It’s the closest to a song he seems to have. Anarriel is taking milk well.

Day 33 - Halapel has decided that he likes his hair long and blonde. His eyes are still changing and his skin is still clay-colored. Bootsy enjoys changing his appearance to mimic his bethkibe randomly so we’re not always sure which one is him. He’s turning into quite the prankster (esetael). Anarriel is trying to open his eyes but keeps deciding not to. He’s a snuggler (kipoel).

Day 39 - Ufetsiel is getting his full feathers! I think he knows what that means because he’s been running around and flapping his wings all day. He and Bootsy have been playing tag while Halapel watches and claps. Anarriel is taking his first steps now and loves to watch his bethkibe running around.

Day 40 - Halapel asked K to teach him to braid today. Bootsy immediately made his hair long and all three sat in a circle, practicing. Ufetsiel has clumsy fingers but Bootsy and Halapel caught on quickly. Anarriel experimented with his hair, trying to make it long. It ended up uneven and he’s bald in some places but he’s learning.
