The Continent of Antarctica first came to prominence on the world stage following it's discovery by the Kingdom of Norway in 1820. The area came to be contested by the Norwegians and the British, with the later eventually winning out in the vie for control. Among the first areas to be extensively settled by the country was the Antarctic Archipelago, which was home to the Nyuric peoples. The first encountered were the so-called 'South Orcadians', a population who were quickly devastated by British colonization. The most enduring of the early people to encounter the British were, perhaps, the Nena people of Amund Island.

The Nena, called the Nèna Yot'eekee in their own language, are a culture of sailors and fisherman who primarily inhabited the largest of the islands making up the Antarctic Archipelago.
