Bala is the goddess of darkness and the principal goddess of the Il Mir. Possibly the most versatile of deities in the pantheon, Bala is seen by some as a malevolent goddess of death and others as an ambivalent goddess of the unknown. While the Il Mir do not detail Bala in their art out of reverence for her symbolism of the unknown, in oral tellings, writings, and other cultures’ descriptions of her she is most commonly depicted as a four armed woman with a veil over her face.
