Year 0

At the beginning of time, there was only a never-ending expanse of water populated with spirits. Pahanā’o, the greatest spirit who was completely androgynous and void of any anatomical or societal definitions of a gender or a sex, moves throughout the vast, endless ocean. E decides to confine the liquid, and form it in the shape of a sphere. E surrounds the sphere with a heavy and vast darkness, that contains the liquid in its shape. The lowest level of the darkness, e tinted blue like the liquid and called it the ‘w̄ōw̄ā’ (meaning the ‘surrounding air’). E filled the liquid with all forms of life, including fish, sea turtles, krill and seaweed, before setting it into motion with waves and currents. E also filled the w̄ōw̄ā with life, populating it with birds before setting it into motion with clouds, wind and currents. However, the birds needed a place to land, and the sea turtles required a place to lay their eggs, so from the void e rose land masses dotted with mountains and riddled with valleys. Grass rolled across the plains and saplings pierced through the dirt to reach for the sky. And the birds had a place to rest, and the sea turtles had a place to lay their eggs. Pahanā’o also created new beings to inhabit the flat land. They ate the fruits of the trees and the grains of the grasslands. Pahanā’o also created humanity, 3 women and 3 men, in order that they may manage the land for the sea turtles and the birds as well as the land creatures. And peace was in order. However, there was one spirit, Paka, who despised the beauty that was created from Pahanā’o. E wished for it to be destroyed, thus, e gathered the other spirits that were jealous of Pahanā’o and they used all of their power to force molten lava from the tops of the highest mountains, and e began killing the grass and desaturating the dirt so that it became dry, granular, and incapable of producing life. They corrupted a great number of the animals, turning them against not only each other but against all of Pahanā’o’s work. As a final act of rebellion, Paka and the other malevolent spirits robbed the sky of its blue tint, returning the world to a state of eternal darkness. Pahanā’o saw the war waged by Paka against eir creation and he was filled with rage. E collected all of the evil spirits and compressed them into a single area. E ripped Paka’s spirit in two, igniting the other spirits into a ball of flame. Pahanā’o cast the inflamed spirits into the void, creating a great light that illuminated the sky and brought the return of day. The humans and the animals thanked Pahanā’o for saving them from eternal darkness. As a reminder of eir grace, Pahanā’o brought back a period of temporary darkness, which he illuminated with the other half of Paka’s soul. This was to ensure that the creation never forget how Pahanā’o had saved them from the evil spirits. Pahanā’o spoke to the humans and gave them eir language, which was comprised of concepts. The people ran into a cave, where they drew each concept that Pahanā’o described to them, so that they might understand the language, thus creating their earliest script. And the world was in order and Pahanā’o left the waters of the earth and cast emself into the void to exist apart from eir creation.
