There are two kinds of blend in  Sialan: weak, and strong.

Strong blends can appear word-initially and inter-vocalically (as below); whereas weak blends can only appear inter-vocalically. These blends are shown in the table below:

Thus, the rules for determining if a blend is strong can be summed up as follows:
  • All blends involving /s/ + a stop or a fricative are strong;
  • All blends involving a fricative + /l/ are strong; and
  • All palatalised blends are strong.

Consonantal Sound Distribution

Word-initial position:
- Any plain consonant is legal.
- Strong blends are legal, weak blends are illegal.
- Long consonants are illegal.

Word-medial position:
- Any plain consonant is legal.
- Long consonants are also legal, inter-vocalically.
- All blends are legal, but only inter-vocalically.

Word-final position:
- All blends are illegal.
- Long consonants are illegal.
- Other consonants (i.e. plain consonants) are legal.

Vocalic Sound Distribution

Word-initial position:
- Any monophthong is legal.
- Polyphthongs beginning with /i(:)_/ [ʲ_] and /u(:)_/ [ʷ_] are legal, all others are illegal.

Word-medial position:
- Any monophthong is legal.
- All polyphthongs are illegal.

Word-final position:
- Any monophthong is legal.
- Polyphthongs beginning with /i(:)_/ [ʲ_] and /u(:)_/ [ʷ_] are legal, all others are illegal.
