[edit] [top]Word order and markers

The word order in Gothab is a bit tricky, since it depends from situation to situation. To always know what the subject, object and verb for a sentence, they use markers. The markers are:

SubjectObjectVerb
giviþ

Note: 'þ' is pronounced like 'th' in 'thanks' and 'æ' is pronounced like 'e' in 'hey'

Which litterally translates to state of knowing (gi), undetermined state (viþ) and living (hæ). If a sentence contains all three, the object marker may be excluded.

But how do you know what word order to use? Well, here's a text explaining when to use what:

SVO - When there's no reason to be polite, like talking to friends and family.
SOV - When there's no reason to be polite, and nothing special is spoken about.
VSO - When there's no reason to be polite, and you're talking about something special.
VOS - When you're being polite, and talking about something special.
OSV - When you're being polite, like talking to your boss or elders.
OVS - When you're being EXTREMELY polite, used only when talking to royals.

A tip to remember all of this:

When being impolite - The subject is first (meaning that the talker's the most important)
When being polite - The object is first (meaning that the listener is the most important)
When talking about something special - The verb is first (meaning that the action is the most important)
When not talking about something special - The verb is last (meaning that the action is the least important)

Okay, so let's say that you're talking to your teacher about an assignment, and you want to say "I like this assignment". First, you need to find the subject ("I"), object ("this assignment") and verb ("like"). So without the correct word order it becomes (when adding the markers): "I-gi like-hæ this assignment-viþ".
Okay, so we got the markers. But which word order will we choose? Well, since you're talking to a teacher we need to be polite, so the object should come before the subject. The verb isn't very special, so the verb comes last. This means that we should use a OSV word order. The final product becomes:
"This assignment-viþ I-gi like-hæ"
