As many of the symbols are difficult or tedious to type repeatedly on a standard keyboard, the handshapes of MXS will be transcribed as follows:
A | Closed fist. Positioning of thumb is not phonemic but typically held beside the fingers rather than curled in front. | |

B | Flat hand with fingers together. | |
C | All fingers away from palm, held together, and curled like a C. | |
E | Pointer and middle finger raised and bent. Other fingers are curled to palm. | |
F | Four fingers up, thumb curled to palm. | |
G | Pointer finger up, all other fingers curled to palm. | |
I | Pinkie finger up, all other fingers curled to palm. | |
L | Pointer finger up, thumb extended to the side, all other fingers curled in. | |
O | Fingers together and curled to make an O. | |
P | Middle finger extended, other fingers curled to palm. | |
R | Pointer and middle fingers extended and crossed over one another. | |
S | Pointer and middle finger extended and bent, spread apart. | |
