Menu 1. Properties of loanwords 2. French loanwords 3. English loanwords 4. Are loanwords good or bad for the language?
Yomki has many loanwords taken from various languages. They are called tolmey ejreditif /tʰolmej ed͡ʒ̥red̥itʰiɸ/ (foreign words). These words make up a significant amount of vocabulary, even rivalling the native vocabulary in amount of words.

[top]Properties of loanwords

Loanwords differ from native words is that they have some different properties. For example, they can have complex onsets and codas, which aren't possible in native words. It also can have the schwa, which appears in some environments and does not occur in native words.
Nearly all loanwords are nouns and can be converted to adjectives or verbs through prefixes. There are very few exceptions (one example is modern, which is an adjective borrowed from French moderne).

[top]French loanwords

French makes up most of the loanwords. It covers a lot of fields, including technical and scientific terms, where most of its vocabulary are borrowed from French. This extensive borrowing also led to many words having 2 or even 3 different sources, which are: tolmey soreditif (native words) tolmey tohomef (native words based on references to certain works) and tolmey ejreditif (loanwords).

[top]English loanwords

English has contributed to a significant amount of vocabulary, including technological terms and words in contemporary times. English loanwords covers mostly the fields relating to technology and cool trends in recent times. Some of the words borrowed from contemporary English are NFT/en.eɸtʰi/
n. non-fungible token
, kul/kʰul/
adj. cool
and femboy/ɸemb̥oj/
n. femboy
.

[top]Are loanwords good or bad for the language?

The issue of loanwords in Yomki is a very divided issue, with opinions differing between people, between fields and even between countries.
According to a survey conducted by The Yomki Language Commission (Language Commission) in 2019 on the general public, 65% of the respondents felt that loanwords are an integral part of the language, 19% of the respondents had an neutral opinion, 14% felt that loanwords is detracting from the language and 2% didn't know or were unsure.
In some fields, loanwords make up an essential part of the vocabulary and new words coined from native roots can not reasonably replace loanwords. However, in other fields, they are perceived as "unnecessary" and detracting.
Either way, the Language Commission coins new words from native roots which can substitute for recent loanwords. The coined words are just merely suggestions and speakers can choose either the loanword or the substitute coined from native roots. It also holds Best Loanword Substitute of the Year
