[comments] [history] The History of the Church of Sysco

The Church of Sysco is a long-standing running joke between myself and some friends of mine from summer camp. In the year of our truck 2018, I attended for the first time Hidden Valley Camp in Granite Falls, Washington. I was coming to camp from Alaska that year. In the years since, I have come to camp from Japan and Ohio.

HVC's food is sourced almost entirely from Sysco. Some fresh vegetables come from the garden, but pasta, juice, meat, and fish all come to camp from Sysco. Whenever the Sysco delivery truck comes into camp during a meal, the entire camp body erupts in jubilant applause. Inspired by this universal appreciation, my tent group (must've been B7 that year?) started to venerate and worship the truck. Whenever the mighty Sysco truck arrived at camp, we bowed down and chanted to it. It delivered us a great bounty of food; Why should we not worship it?

Ever since then, my friends from that year and I have cracked jokes about it whenever the truck came around. Having an inside joke with those folks is very special to me. All of them live in Washington, most of them go to the same school, but the only time I ever see them is at summer camp. Being able to connect with them, even over something so stupid as a cult of Sysco, is a special silly thing we can all share.
