[edit] [top]The Importance of Heraldry

To Cendaeans, heraldry is as important as choosing a baby's name. Everything about the shield carries the parents's hopes and dreams for their child's future. By creating a blazon for their child, they're ensuring that the family legacy continues, and that their history and values will be preserved.
Blazons are written in Old Cendaean. The way it works is that the family brings their shield design to an Order of the Cactus member, who writes up a blazon for them and sends them on their way. Minstrels make pretty good money off of emblazoning when they don't feel up to performing.

[edit] [top]Tinctures, Metals, and Mixing

The colors of the shield usually hold the most meaning, and they differ slightly from the tinctures and metals here on Earth. The wider variety of colors comes from Mage Orders creating their own arms to display, and mages being awarded a secondary, magic arms. (I'll go into that later.)
Without further ado, here are the official colors and their meanings.

Tinctures
Belér (Red) - Power, Bravery, Protection
Chaése (Orange) - Creativity, Individuality, Confidence
Íache (Blue) - Wisdom, Loyalty, Peace
Mháná (Black) - Trustworthiness, Honor, Ferocity
Mhíon (Purple) - Skill in Magic, Camaraderie, Intelligence
Náire (Cream) - Beauty, Grace, Cunning
Rórídte (Pink) - Talent, Boldness, Originality
Sálhá (Green) - Prosperity, Family, Hospitality

Metals
Elóne (Gold, represented by Yellow) - Stability, Happiness, Healthiness
Phrená (Silver, represented by White) - Wealth, Nobility, Renown
Róselne (Rose Gold) - Chivalry, Kindness, Perseverance
Túṁhne (Bronze) - Slyness, Security, Luck
Ṁháne (Pewter) - Resilience, Readiness, Strength

Color Rules
Mixing is when two colors from the same family touch one another. (For example Róselne on Phrená or Mháná on Rórídte.) Within the tincture family, mixing is alright. With metals, it's a different story. Phrená on Elóne and vice versa are combinations reserved for high nobility and royalty. Phrená on Ṁháne and vice versa can be used by the upper class and above. Any other metal mixings are prohibited. (Because Ṁháne and Rócelne would be a nightmare to look at. Cendaeans are all about that ·°·*~ᎯᏋᎦᎿᏂᏋᎿᎲᏣ~*·°·)

[edit] [top]Divisions, Patterns, and their Meanings

How a shield is divided can say a lot about a person's life. (And by extension, that of their parents'.) Patterns often indicate social status.
There isn't all that much to say about divisions, so let's delve right into them.
