About Cartist
The Cartist Language is spoken by 200,000 people in the south of Cartia Island, of which half of the population is monolingual or used to be monolingual until the age of 14 when English and Danish become compulsory subjects at school. It became a Danish and British colony in 1735 and 1887 respectively together with Moritia (the northern part of Cartia Island) and gained independence in 2003.
The language belongs to an ancient language family called Cortitian and now Cartist and Moritese are the only two major surviving languages left, after the death of the last Artitian (also a Cortistic language) speaker, Gordon K. Hansen, died in 2010 at the age of 84. Moritese is considered to be more conservative than Cartist but phonology-wise Cartist is considered to be more elegant. They are mutually unintelligible but they both use the same script.
Cartist has 7 noun cases: Nominative, Accusative, Genitive, Dative, Associative, Locative, and Temporal. Moritese has a separate ending for Dative but its users are considered to be dying out, as the noun case starts to merge with Accusative.
Cartist has no grammatical gender, and neither does Moritese. Due to some (but extremely limited) lexical similarity, some linguists suspect that the language family was in fact separated from a larger language family which Proto-Uralic was also separated from, however this topic remains highly disputed and mostly unaccepted.
