About Nthatu baNthatu is a language spoken by the amaThatu people who live in the Kgalagali desert. Thatu society is structured around a strict class hierarchy between nobles, peasants and merchants. Nobles organise themselves into noble houses who own peasants, land and all the cattle in their territory. Nobles also get to elect a high king who serves as a primus inter pares. Merchants are also organised into houses but they lack voting rights. Some baNthatu speakers are hunter-gatherers and live outside Thatu society and call themselves amaNqowane.

The language is heavily inspired by the South African Bantu languages with further inspiration coming from the other Bantu languages and the Khoisan languages and a smattering of Georgian and Basque.
