About Illyrian
Illyrian (Illyrian: langua ljirjés, ljirjésc) is a Romance language that is spoken in the Mediterranean coast of Central Croatia and its islands. Separate from the Istriot and Dalmatian langauges, its position in the Romance family is heavily disputed. Its name refers to the Illyrians, a culture that inhabited the area where it is spoken in antiquity.
Once spread throughout the Adriatic Coast, besides Istriot and Dalmatian, it is now spoken primarily in the Republic of Lastovo (25,000). Approximately 7,000 other speakers live in the Croatian coastline communities, primarily by older generations.
