About Proto-Suvo-Poshumic
Very old! Proto³-language.
Two dialects: Western & Eastern
Main difference is insertion of a- before initial {sp st sk} in Western dialect & whether <z> is an s-sound or r-sound.
Example derivations ( > Proto-Suvonic > Suvoon)
"frog" igyāskātay > eggaskatekka > gaskáth "frog"
"jump" igyāska > eggaskə > gask "dance"
"yesterday" hanxsīxtyū > həñsseettu > ngrát ~ ngshátú (variances by dialect?)
This language is as far back as any of its daughters can be reconstructed.
Note that the sequence /sh/ is pronounce as in e.g. the German word "bisher." It is never pronounced as in the English word "ship."
Grammatical features/daughter language traits:
SOV or SVO
Typically, more postpositions than prepositions
Adjectives, numerals and demonstratives may be in any order, historically had the following agreement affixes:
*-∅ an. sg. (*-tā in Proto-Poshumic)
*-yuqi inan. sg.
*-nabāy an. du.
*-mi inan. du.
*-sānk an. pl.
*-nusi inan. pl.
Animate/inanimate gender
Nominative/accusative/genitive/dative case system, singular/dual/plural number (at least some of these elements are lost in all daughter languages).
*-may inan. du.
*-tawq an. du.
*-nuq inan. pl.
*-qū an. pl.
Cases:
*-ān, accusative
*-ī or *-y, genitive
*-zan, dative
In Suvonic languages, case marking is only kept in the pronouns and the marked tenses are all conflated; in Poshumic languages, all three are kept (becoming /a, i, ɯ/). In Suvonic languages, the plural markers are applied erratically (and eventually all but disappear in Suvoon); in Poshumic languages, only *-tawq and -*qū are kept, with gender no longer influencing their application (except on 2-3 irregular words with *-nuq in the plural, specifically "trees," "rocks," and "clay")
