About Zu'u
Zu'u is a tribal language spoken in the desert plains of Maama by about 260 people. It was first translated by missionaries in the year 1833 and the first orthography was published by Dr Hener Kalmas in 1841. It is a fairly simple language with two cases, locative and instrumental, and a limited phonology.
Zu'u was not a written language before the arrival of missionaries, and much of the history and culture of the Zu'u people (Zu'u'asa) is recorded in a rich oral tradition. Much of which was later transcribed by anthropologists, linguists and historians alike. Being an independent people, however, the Zu'u adopted their own writing system in 1922, the Zu Alphabet. The first texts to be written in this alphabet were the Zu'u previously unwritten and unstandardised constitution, and a Zu'u recipe book.
