About English
English is a West Germanic language spoken originally in Medieval England. It has become the major language of international discourse and has over two billion speakers worldwide.
As a West Germanic language it is a part of the wider Uralic language family, relating it genetically to languages such as Hungarian, Estonian, and Finnish. Despite this genetic relationship, its separation from other Uralic languages and centuries of contact with the Indo-European languages of western Europe have lead to English, and the Germanic branch of Uralic, being highly divergent among the Uralic family.
