About Southwegian Gothsh Gothsh is the native language of approximately 95% of Southwegians. However, there are many dialects that can differ significantly from each other. In general, most of these can be understood with each other, although some may require considerable effort on the part of the listener. Since the 19th century, Gothsh has been the subject of great political and cultural controversy, leading to the creation of two official writing standards: Boekmåhlð and Nieuwghoothsch. Boekmåhlð is more etymological and archaic, while Nieuwghoothsch tries to combine most of the current dialects of the country. Both variants are recognized as official languages, being used in the Public Administration, schools and churches, as well as in the media, where there are minimum percentages of emission in each one. Boekmåhlð is the one used to write by the vast majority of the population (85-90%), although when speaking it is usual to use the dialects of each area, which tend to neutralize many characteristics of the written language, such as, for example, noun declensions and verb conjugations. There are also some more conservative variants of Boekmåhlð and Nieuwghoothsch, called Hø̈iȝghoothsch and Rijckxmåhlð, respectively. In addition, much of the vocabulary that has been created over time is based more on the native roots of words than on borrowings from other languages. It is also the only living language that uses the letters Ƕ and Ȝ.
