About Malenese
NOTICE: LIKE THE OLD FEIRIE THIS PROTOLANG IS ON INDEFINITE HOLD.
Malenese, or, by its native name:madje is the language spoken primarily by the Feirie, but also by various other Fae creatures, a few human outposts and assorted members of the Drakyn. Malenese is the only language of the Fei spoken in the mountains. The vocabulary is mostly native terms, while the grammar inherited many strange features from its mothers.
Orthography:
- The native system is a runic alphabet that heavily uses diacritics to mark the various phones;
- The romanization is very unnatural-looking, caused by the diacritics being marked with letters, for ease of writing.
Phonology:
- A very complicated, plosive-less phonology, that employs whistles, compression and three voicing onset times, for a total of 58 phonemic consonants;
- The five base vowels take on some of the the qualities of the preceding consonant, e.g.: nasal consonant = nasal vowel, making for a total of four ways for each vowel to be pronounced allophonically, plus an entire second set when unstressed, for a total of 40 vowels.
- The rhotic sound of the language varies allophonically drastically, depending on the surrounding letters, with eight ways for it to be pronounced, but is usually treated as a vowel.
- The syllable structure is (C(j(w(h),h,c(w)),w(h),h,c(w))V(r)
Grammer:
- Strict syntax that shifts from OVS to both OSV or VOS predictably;
- A six way non-local direction system, from which most adpositions derive;
- No intransitive or ditransitive verbs;
- Tense is not marked on verbs, while both aspect and mood are;
- Adverbs come in two kinds: temporal and physical. The latter precedes verbs, while the formal antecedes them;
- There are seven tense markers that function as temporal adverbs. The eighth tense, gnomic, is null-marked;
- Nouns have two genders: sentient and non-sentient.
