About Old Mtsqrveli

The Mtsqrveli languages are heavily inspired by the Kartvelian languages, especially Georgian. Born in the Dadogavi Mountains, the Mtsqrveli languages boast a rich agglutinative word-derivation system, long strings of consonants (including ejectives), free word order and many marked cases. Unlike the Kartvelian languages, however, their morphosyntactic alignment is nominative-accusative rather than ergative-absolutive.

Grammatical Overview:
  • Highly agglutinative, slightly fusional
  • Easy and plentiful derivation with a large body of agglutinative affixes
  • Nom/Acc alignment that makes a definiteness distinction - two separate nominative cases, NOM.INDEF and NOM.DEF, and two separate accusative cases, ACC.INDEF and ACC.DEF...
  • ...but that's the only definiteness distinction made; there are no articles
  • Technically free word order, but SVO is common 'cause I'm a native English speaker and that just comes more naturally when writing
  • Verbs conjugate for object, not subject
  • 14 noun cases: indefinite nominative, definite nominative, indefinite accusative, definite accusative, dative, genitive, comitative, abessive, benefactive, originative vocative, translative-lative, essive-locative, and exessive-ablative
  • SG/DU/PL distinction
  • No demonstrative proximity distinctions
  • Lots of ejective stops & affricates and an overall phonology that makes you feel good for pronouncing anything right
  • Front/back vowel harmony
  • Two native writing systems: turkroni, inspired by mkhedruli, and dimtsġkhioghi, inspired by asomtavruli.
