Welcome to my page for Girekian!
Qiræk is the proto-language that was spoken by the ancient people of Majæn. (Majæn is a distant planet with two moons whose people evolved as fisher-foragers.) It is not truly actively spoken in modern times, although it is used for religious/ceremonial purposes and there are small pockets of people who study it as a means of understanding the modern languages that descended from it (similar to Latin on Earth).

Notable Features:
- words exclusively start with consonants and vowel clusters are illegal
- nouns decline by number: single, dual, trial, plural
- conjugation can be tricky, involving tense, aspect, and voice with sometimes-confusing rules about agent vs grammatical subject, as well as the conjugation of what you'd think was adverbs (but adverbs don't really exist)
- time is very important, so the perception of and interaction with time is quite complex
- use of punctuation is very limited (generally to the beginning and end of a sentence)
- independent clauses are SV(O) if first in a sentence but (O)SV if preceded by another clause, while subordinate clauses are V(O)S and clauses without their own subjects are V(O)P
- capitalization is reserved for proper nouns, which is pretty much only names of people
- fish and fishing are central to the culture and therefore the language
- septenary (base 7) counting system
- calendar based on the sun, dual moons, and stars

Syllable StructureCV(C)
1: Words only start with consonants, never vowels.
2: Consonant clusters are not preferred but not illegal, except word initial clusters are not allowed. Typically consonant clusters are found in compound words and words derived from phrases. No more than two consonants in a cluster. So a word may end up looking like CVCCVCCV(C) ... for example
3: Vowel clusters are strictly illegal.

Single syllable words are unstressed, but may be stressed for emphasis. Words with more than three syllables have primary stress on the second, then secondary stress on every other syllable. Affixes may affect the stress placement but are not themselves stressed.
