About Proto-Qameit

Actually a picture of the Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, but let's pretend like it's actually a Qameit Culture archaeological site. Picture source.

The proto-lang of the extremely short-lived Qameit language(s) - an isolate attested only on a handful of tiny islands in the seas of Celea. Inspired by the megalithic temples of Malta, the Qameit left behind stone hypogea and temple foundations, some with brief inscriptions, the only hint of Qameit writing - if it is indeed writing at all. They died out long before the Argosian and Karkey settlers settled the region - where they came from and where they went is an unsolved mystery.

Grammatical Overview:
  • Partly analytic, partly agglutinative, not at all fusional
  • Transitive alignment - sole argument is prefixed with t-, but the transitive subject/object are neither morphologically nor syntactically distinguished
  • Only 3 cases transitive, intransitive and oblique object (any other kind of object, inc. dative and prepositional)
  • Free word order, but usually SVO just because that's easier for my English-speaking mind
  • Human/Non-human noun distinction
  • No plurality or definiteness distinctions
  • No distinction between 2nd and 3rd person - there is only 1st person and non-1st person
  • Construct state to indicate possession - 4 different suffixes, to account for the both the 1st/non-1st and human/non-human distinctions
  • Stupidly complicated orthography to match an even more stupidly headache-inducing phonology
