The Rùma Language
Background
At its core, Rùma is a trade language that evolved from the mingling of Ruyman and Skaradok in north-western Lonos, in present-day Valdare. Today, it is the dominant language on the continent of Lonos. Most Rùma vocabulary comes from Ruyman, but there are dozens of loanwords from Skaradok in common parlance. Over the language's 600-odd years of evolution, various sound changes have occurred, as well as a staggering shift in syntax.
Here are some interesting features of modern Rùma:
Syntax
Rùma is a nominative-accusative SVO and moderately head-initial, but has peculiar prepositional phrase placement. Generally, sentences are structured as Subject + Indirect Object + Verb + Direct Object, with head-initial noun phrases and head-final verb phrases. (This is a relic of Ruyma's incredibly rare OVS syntax.) Some examples of this are:
I give him food = Ke ju prèn fecc = 1SFirst person singular (person)
speaker, signer, etc.; I 3MThird person masculine (person)
he/they.OBJObject (argument) give food = ke ju pr]n fec
I give him food in the morning = Ke ju sos hajin prèn fecc = 1SFirst person singular (person)
speaker, signer, etc.; I 3MThird person masculine (person)
he/they.OBJObject (argument) during morning give food = ke ju sos hajin pr]n fec
You get the idea.
Nouns and Pronouns
Rùma nouns may be inflected for the paucal (fewer than 5 items) or plural (more than 5 items). See this table for examples.
Rùma has a large pronoun inventory, with singular and plural for first, second, third, and fourth (the hypothetical "one" and "they") persons. Pronouns inflect for Subject (nominative), Object (accusative or dative), and Genitive cases, with alienability distinctions in the genitive. See the pronouns and possessives table for examples.
