About Shetlandic Shetlandic is, in one sense, not a conlang, in that it is my native tongue. However, it is regarded as a dialect of Scots, which is itself often regarded as a dialect of English. The term 'Shetlandic,' popular for a short time in the mid 20th Century, is now repudiated in favour of the mass noun 'dialect,' with its connotations of subcategorisation and indefinability.

The form presented on this website envisages a parallel universe in which, instead of being deprived of any identity other than the mass noun 'dialect,' Shetlandic is accorded a name and identity. Also, instead of being spelt randomly according to the inconsistencies of English spelling which disguises its intrinsic phonology, it is spelt using an orthography derived largely from Old Icelandic which expresses that phonology. The word 'Shetlandic,' now repudiated, is revived as a name for this parallel presentation.

Shetlandic can be best described as a form of Scots superimposed upon a Norse substratum, deriving from the Norn language formerly spoken in Shetland. It also contains vocabulary from other languages such as Dutch and modern standard English - with its substrata of languages such as Latin, Greek and French - as well as having certain characteristics of its own. It is perhaps the version of 'English' - in the widest sense of forms of language derived from Old English or Anglo Saxon - most removed from standard English, other than pidgins and creoles.
