About Spevten
Spewsenspewl is a small community founded in 2015 by a group of idealists who hoped to build a utopian society as an alternative to hypercapitalism. A lot has changed in the hundred years that have passed since then. Thanks to the ecological upheavals of the 21st century, what was once a little village on a hill is now an island located somewhere in the North Sea. Once in a while, survivors from the great disaster make their way across the treacherous waters by boat, and ask to become one of the Spevt. Becoming Spevten involves a number of obstacles, including learning the Spevten language.
The Spevten language was created as this community was first being founded. The notion was that the English language had embedded into the Euro-American cultural consciousness values such as egocentrism and heteronormativity that could only be truly escaped by rebuilding a society from scratch, with a new language. The Spevten language aimed to avoid many of the social problems inherent in English, but that doesn't mean that all social problems were eradicated: indeed a great deal of the Spevten vocabulary is given over to discussing conflict, toxicity and other troubles that are commonly faced in an idealistic community.
The focus of life in Spewsenspewl has always been the ongoing process of making our surroundings inhabitable. We Spevt do not simply happen to live in one place or another, but work together to make a life out of a place. The early Spevt philosophers argued that in every society people are always making the world that they lived in, and making that world consciously is integral to finding utopia. “Spey” is one of the founding principles of Spevt culture: that a home is made through daily effort.
