About Utar Utar (утартаӄы, utartaqy), Arutor (арутортаӄы, arutortaqy) or Northern Ainu (арутор-айнутаӄы, arutor-ajnutaqy) is a language belonging to the Ainu language family. It is very close to the Hokkaido Ainu language.

The Utar language originated in northern Sakhalin when the region began to be actively inhabited by the Ainu. Local dialects began to acquire various borrowings from the Nivkh and Tungusic languages, as very often all these peoples lived side by side and intermingled. These dialects soon spread to the south of Sakhalin and onto the continent, where new settlements began to appear near the Amur River. There were several attempts in the Soviet Union to standardise the Northern Ainu dialects. Eventually, the Utar language emerged, based on various regional variants.
