About Xal'yla'v This is part of the Langswap project. Further information on Xal'yla'v specifically can be found in the Sketch and Vocabulary and the Grammar, both of which are works in progress.

Xal'yla'v is spoken by people on the southeastern portion of the western half of Kaladee'o (Xaltee'u, in Xal'yla'v). The area is a large temperate rainforest, with several large river systems. The Xal live along these rivers, and different dialects use their own home river as the reference point for directions. The language is broadly dependent-marking, but features clitics that can mimic some typically head-marking features. Morphological alignment is broadly ergative or neutral, but syntactic ergativity is rare. The language is quite unlike its western and northern neighbors (Kalula and Kal'ulǽ', respectively) in being generally verb-initial and much more open to head-initial orders, although there is quite a lot of flexibility in word order.

Syllable Structure(C)V(V)(S), where C is any consonant; V(V) can be any short vowel, long vowel, or one of the two diphthongs; and S is any sonorant; however, a high vowel with a glide coda combines to form a long high vowel, and coda glides may not appear following diphthongs.
Stress informationStress appears in one of the last three consonants. Generally, if the final syllable has a long vowel and/or a coda consonant it takes stress and otherwise the penultimate syllable takes stress; however, a final CVVCVC results in penultimate stress and final CVVCVCV results in antepenultimate stress.
OtherNasal place assimilation within words is generally absolute (though sometimes omitted to overenunciate distinctions), and occasionally occurs from one word to another.
