Etymology
From Proto-Amazon *'uta'u (to swim) + *-irut (animal agent)
A common folk etymology suggests that it comes from tirut (swift bird) and hu- (relating to water), the explanation being given in the form of the story of how the otter was created which states that a swift (or swallow depending on the storyteller) fell into a river whilst drinking but was saved by Haaqi’a the god of rivers and water by being transformed into the first otter
