Etymology
Mauļat 'natsu', one of two dialectal words for "nothing", + the '-aņ' from 'laraņ'; source word from 'na' (thing) + '-tsu' (abessive suffix), literally "without anything", originally meaning "without possession/merit" Notes
Humble 1st person pronoun. Usage based on relationship to listener. Used when speaking to people of much higher status (i.e peasant to nobility, anyone to a monarch), to show reverence to the listener (i.e when speaking to a monk), in formal literature, in proverbs/scripture, etc. Can be off-putting when used in the wrong situations or sound like the speaker is trying to come off as wise/exceedingly humble (successfully or not). Monks and other deeply religious people, however, use it when addressing everyone.
