Etymology
Proto-Cis-Tahianshima *ɟegme₂ (to have) Notes
Its use is strongly preferred in formal language, as well as colloquially for most speakers in Southern, Southeastern, Eastern areas, the more recently colonized Northern frontiers, and in most eastern islands (Tāhiańśīma, Kāṭilayāram) of Laltīmāhia.
Other speakers colloquially use the construction TOPIC (possessor) + DIR (possessed) + 'to be'. Thus, for "I have a car":
Formal language; S/SE/E/N/islands : (lāli) cūllau jėmieimeṭ
Colloquial language in all other areas : lāliat cūlla jar
Note that the "TOPIC + DIR + to be" construction may also be heard in areas where normally the use of "jėmieke" is preferred, in this case emphasis is put on a temporary state that's going to end soon.
