Native Germanic word, inherited from Middle Low German eilant, Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *awjō + land(Cf. Low German Eiland)
Note: Old Saxon ōi is reflected as /e:/ in nouns, but /ɔɪ/ in adjectives in Town Speech, because they were from uninflected forms(which became ôi > ôji > ø̂je > êj) and inflected forms(which became ôia > ôja > ôje > ôj) of Middle Low German respectively.
