From Arabic سَبَج (sabaj), rom Middle Persian špk' (/šabag/), from šp (/šab/), from Proto-Indo-European *kʷsep-. Assimilation occured. The meaning evolved from "jet, obsidian" to "black rock" to "coal". Gave rise to the name for the colour black.
