Unlike their peers in Europe and in the rest of Asia, Velmarins never lost track of their names; some genealogies can trace their descent to the initial founders of the country in the early third century. The Roman naming system of the Principate had, in general, three parts: the praenomen, the nomen, and the cognomen.
Though it is never used for personal identification (about 65% of women and 15% of men don’t have one), the first part of a Velmarin name is the prainóme.
There are 19 recognised praenomina, each with an abbreviation: Marcu (M), Luciu (L), Caiu (C), Publiu (P), Muhammadu (Mh), Quintu (Q), Titu (T), Cnaeu (Cn), Pedru (Pd), Sestu (S), Spuriu (Sp), Appiu (Ap), Decimu (D), Aolu (A), Postumu (Ps), Octau (O), Uiviu (U), Numeru (N), Maniu (Mn); although others may be used, they are deprecated.
