In their citation form, adjectives will always contain /o/, e.g. ātoi (sweet), twīsho (scared), īo (small). This /o/ is subject to an ablaut effect based upon which class the adjective's head noun is. If the ablaut causes an impossible consonant cluster, the first vowel of the ablaut is inserted between the two consonants. Adjectives only inflect for class.

1: On occasion, the adjective and affix will overlap in a way that allows for two possible solutions. The most technical and formal solution is the one that preserves the ablaut and original adjective. Thus, don + in should result in dinin to be grammatically correct. However, all but the greatest grammar sticklers will use the shorter form, din, during informal conversations. There is some regional variance to this as well. Johto is more likely to use dinin in day-to-day life but din amongst friends and family. Kanto, on the other hand, rarely ever uses dinin (or similar adjective formations) except in legal paperwork.
