The Republic of Marita is a large country on the continent of Levria bordered by Corland to the north, Rideria and Sur Ossetia to the west, The Emirate of Vorak to the south west and The People's Nation of Hangassa to the south. Its western coast runs along the Marilian Ocean and its southern border overlaps the northern edge of the Alt'aghir desert (Marinese: Haɏátyg Altagéra). It's modern borders and constitution were drawn up in the year 1399, but Marita has been a nation in some form for at least 5,000 years. Today, Marita is the worlds forerunner in human rights and living conditions. It is also the most ecologically friendly place on the planet.
It is not without it's downfalls, however. Marita, because of it's long western coastline, it is prone to both earthquakes and hurricanes. The 1934 Earthquake of the capital, Valeāta, measured 8.6 on the Richter scale and killed nearly 22,000 people. It is the greatest tragedy in the history of the country in peacetime.
Marita is often in conflict with it's neighbours. Particularly with The Emirate of Vorak, which, contrastly, has some of the worst conditions regarding human rights. The War of Freedom (1992 -1998) was a war between Marita, Vorak and Hangassa, and was started when Vorak forces invaded the south of Marita in what they called a 'Surge of Principles'. In fact, in Vorak parlance, the war is called 'The Principled War'. In Marita, Rideria and Corland, the Fifth of Paséna is now known as The Day of the Lost to commemorate the end of the War of Freedom.
The calendar of Marita, as with all Levrian countries is based on the solar year and begins with Year and Day One when the counting of years began. Currently, it is the year 2040CE (CE stands for the Chronicling Epoch). Each Levrian Year has 299 days in Ten Months.

A few famous [or infamous] days in Marita include:
15 Ávegir, 1177 - Suvas: Queen Aranēa III is assassinated just before sunset in the Marinese capital of Valeāta. The perpetrator, Vilias Znek was a Vorak spy and was captured at the scene and executed four days later.
23 Dekrīvim, 1421 - Ninūśvas: Doctor Rávan Śȳmasīni invents anaesthetic, revolutionising medicine first in Marita and then across the continent of Levria
32 Namsvéta, 1580 - Naravas: Éran Voran Maritóvan, widely considered as the greatest Marinese composer, is born in the city of Naēva. His 'Magnum Opus', "The Forest Sings of Water", premiered 42 years later on 7 Venlīga, 1622 - Ninūśvas in the Valeāta Halls of Expression, conducted by Maritóvan himself. He followed the premier by playing an encore he had composed for solo Quevaphone (Mar: Kuēvārion), a reed instrument similar to Earth's oboe but with a warmer, richer sound.
Marita has been in existence as a nation for at least 5,000 years. Historians believe that ancient Maritans were driven south due to the Third Ice Age which blanketed most of the northern hemisphere in ice and snow. Pottery and weaponry dating back to this time shows an already relatively advanced race able to produce simple alloys such as bronze and pewter and with strong artistic skills in their craftsmanship and decoration. Ancient writings have also been uncovered, though sadly not many are legible. Those that are are usually mythologies and religious teachings. Marita has been a secular nation for at least 3,000 years though religion is practiced by many Maritans, but it forms no part of government or judicial practises.
Marita did once have a hereditary monarchy (disbanded in 1745) which began with the reign of King Néras I (1067BCE - 1002BCE) and ended with King Ōlavi VII (1678CE - 1745CE). After King Ōlavi VII's death, the monarchy was disbanded as per the King's own wishes. The royal family had given most of their power over to the government, and they decided that to be a truly democratic nation, all power must be given to the government. King Ōlavi's son, Māħusi Volhás (1700 - 1771) welcomed the decision and instead became a political activist.
