Kayelkian is a language that has a somewhat complex phonological inventory. This tutorial is aimed at teaching the right pronunciations.
Plosives | |||
---|---|---|---|
d | k | b | ‘ |
/d/ | /g/ | /b/ | /ʔ/ |
Kayelkian only features voiced plosives, meaning that the vocal chords are always used in pronouncing them.
- For the /d/, place the tongue against the alveolar ridge, just behind your teeth.
- For the /g/, place the tongue against the soft part of your palate, all the way in the back.
- For the /b/, close your lips.
After doing this, breathe against the obstruction while voicing and move it out of the way. If done correctly, you should have just articulated a plosive!
/ʔ/ is a different story entirely. It is called a glottal stop, and marks a moment where you cut off your breath entirely.
When you hold your breath, you can feel something in your throat. This is exactly the thing you do when you encounter it in a word.
